After you purchase your car, truck or SUV, it's important to keep up with regular maintenance to keep it running on the road longer. Most drivers are familiar with routine maintenance items like oil changes, battery replacements, changing wiper blades. We're here to make sure you know when it's time to replace your tires!

If you have been riding on the same set of tires for a while or think it may be time to replace them, there's a few easy checks you can do at home. Let's first break down the major factors that signal it's time to get new tires - age of your tires, wear on your tires and your tires' exposure to weather elements.

First, let's check the tread. Most drivers are familiar with the penny tread check. If you're not, here it is. Take a penny and point Abraham Lincoln's head down. Insert the penny into the grooves on your tire tread. If any part of Lincoln's head is not visible because of the tire tread, your tire tread is in good condition. If you're able to fully see Lincoln's head, your tread has been worn down and it's time to replace your tires.

How old are your tires? Another important factor when considering if it's time for new tires is how old they are. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend drivers replace tires after 6 years. We recommend consulting both your vehicle manufacturer recommendation as well as your tire manufacturer recommendations.

Tires can also wear down faster depending on the weather and road conditions you're driving in. If you live in a place with extreme temperatures (hot or cold) or drive on particularly bad road conditions (potholes and rocks), your vehicle may require new tires faster than others.
